The University of Kigali (UoK) is strengthening its commitment to balanced campus development, higher academic standards and a culture of discipline, with Chairman of the University Governing Body Philibert Afrika emphasising that every campus must uphold the same commitment to quality education and institutional excellence. In fact, UoK Chairman Calls for Equal Campus Development, Academic Excellence and Discipline as key priorities for the institution.
Speaking during an interactive meeting with students and staff at the Musanze Campus, Afrika said the University’s growth must be driven by investment in academic quality, highly qualified lecturers and an environment that prepares students to become responsible professionals and contributors to national development. This supports the message of UoK Chairman Calls for Equal Campus Development, Academic Excellence and Discipline throughout university policies.
“The University of Kigali was not established simply to make money. The revenue we generate is reinvested in the institution to ensure that we attract the best academic staff and provide quality teaching to our students,” Afrika told the gathering.
The meeting was attended by Vice Chancellor Prof. George Kimathi and hosted by Musanze Campus Principal Dr. Leopold Hakizimana and ADVCA Mr. Cyprien SIKUBWABO.
Afrika underscored the importance of ensuring that the University’s academic standards, services and institutional activities are consistently implemented across all its campuses, enabling students to access quality education regardless of where they study.
He congratulated the Musanze Campus on its progress and reaffirmed the commitment of the University’s senior leadership to supporting its continued development.
Chairman emphasises discipline and academic integrity.
Beyond infrastructure and academic investment, Afrika called on students to demonstrate discipline, integrity and good character, stressing that academic success must be accompanied by a strong sense of responsibility.

He urged students to take their studies seriously, respect the University’s rules and regulations, and recognise that their conduct reflects not only their personal values but also the reputation of the institution. Most importantly, UoK Chairman Calls for Equal Campus Development, Academic Excellence and Discipline as the foundation for student success.
The Chairman emphasised that students should prepare themselves to serve their communities and contribute to Rwanda’s development after graduation.
The University’s commitment to excellence is further reflected in its continued recruitment of highly qualified lecturers from different countries, bringing additional expertise and perspectives into its academic programmes.
Afrika revealed that discussions were ongoing with the Higher Education Council (HEC) on the introduction of additional programmes, including in Health and Education, subject to the required approval processes.
Vice Chancellor highlights investment in teaching and learning.
Prof. Kimathi commended the Musanze Campus for improvements in infrastructure, classrooms and internet connectivity, alongside progress in student enrolment. Furthermore, this demonstrates the importance of the UoK Chairman Calls for Equal Campus Development, Academic Excellence and Discipline initiative in all university operations.
He emphasised that these improvements must translate into a stronger learning experience, supported by qualified lecturers, modern facilities and opportunities for students to broaden their academic horizons.
“The University of Kigali is committed to providing students with quality education and opportunities that prepare them for the demands of the global labour market. We want our students to acquire the knowledge, skills and international exposure necessary to succeed in their respective professions,” said Prof. Kimathi.

The Vice Chancellor announced that additional Law lecturers were expected to join the Musanze Campus the following week, a move aimed at strengthening teaching capacity and supporting students pursuing legal studies.
Prof. Kimathi urged lecturers and other academic staff to pursue PhD studies and advance their professional qualifications, noting that a highly qualified academic workforce is essential to improving teaching standards and strengthening the University’s academic reputation.
Musanze Campus reflects UoK’s international outlook.
In his welcome remarks, Dr. Hakizimana introduced staff members and students, whose introductions highlighted representation from various countries. The diverse student population reflects the campus’s contribution to regional higher education and the University’s ambition to provide an inclusive academic environment for learners from different backgrounds.
Dr. Hakizimana also highlighted the campus’s progress in improving its facilities and supporting student enrolment, reinforcing its role in advancing the University’s academic mission beyond Kigali.

The engagement concluded with University leaders thanking students and staff for their participation, followed by a farewell photograph with the Chairman and members of the campus community.
Afrika’s message placed development, academic integrity and discipline at the heart of UoK’s institutional priorities, emphasising that sustainable growth requires investment in facilities, qualified lecturers and a student community committed to high standards.
