Dr. Tabitha Esther Kaburia (PhD) is an accomplished academic, language specialist, researcher,
educator, and higher-education leader with extensive experience in Language and
Communication Studies, English and Academic Literacy, Performing Arts, curriculum
development, academic leadership, and programme management.
She holds a PhD in Language and Media Studies from the University of KwaZulu-Natal
(UKZN), South Africa, where she also earned a Master’s degree in Language and Media Studies
Cum Laude and an Honours degree in Language and Media Studies. She holds a Bachelor of
Education (Arts) from Moi University, Kenya, together with additional professional training in
education and Teaching English as a Foreign Language.
Dr. Kaburia has built an extensive academic career across Kenya and South Africa, serving in
teaching, academic leadership, language coordination, curriculum development, student
supervision, assessment, research, and quality assurance roles. At the University of KwaZulu-
Natal, she served in language-focused academic leadership, including Head of the Language
Department, and coordinated language and academic literacy modules. Her UKZN experience
included responsibility for language teaching, curriculum development, assessment, student
progression, academic support, and the development of innovative approaches to teaching and
learning. Her professional experience also includes serving as a Adjunct English Specialist at
STADIO University, South Africa, where she contributed to English language development,
academic support, and enhancement of students' language and academic literacy competencies.
In Kenya, Dr. Kaburia has held significant roles in language, communication, and media
education, including Head of the Centre for Language at the Islamic University of Kenya;
Performing Arts Trainer and Preview Supervisor at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication;
Linguistics Lecturer and Academic Supervisor at The East African University. These experiences
have strengthened her expertise in language education, communication, creative arts, media,
programme coordination, and professional training.
Her academic career is complemented by extensive experience in research, curriculum
development, academic writing, communication skills, and learner support. She has taught at
undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervised student research, contributed to curriculum
development and quality assurance, and participated in interdisciplinary academic initiatives.
As Director of the Centre for Modern Languages at the University of Kigali, Dr. Kaburia brings
together this multidisciplinary experience to develop a Centre that is academically rigorous while
remaining responsive to the needs of learners, professionals, organisations, and the wider
community.Her vision is to position the Centre as a dynamic hub for language education,
professional communication, international examination preparation, corporate language training,
and lifelong learning, contributing to Rwanda's growing regional and international engagement.

She is passionate about creating language-learning environments that are practical, inclusive,
innovative, culturally responsive, and connected to real-world opportunities. Through the Centre
for Modern Languages, she seeks to empower learners with the confidence and communication
competencies required to study, work, travel, lead, and thrive in an increasingly interconnected
world.
