The University of Kigali (UoK), the University of Lay Adventists of Kigali (UNILAK), and the Rwanda Red Cross Society, in partnership with the Spanish Red Cross and with financial support from the European Union, convened a Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS) Validation Workshop at the Centre Diocésain Pastorale Inshuti in Rusizi District on July 16, 2026.
Participants included the Rusizi District Director of Health, Rusizi District Environmental Officer, Rusizi District WASAC Manager, Head of Health and Community Services at Rwanda Red Cross Society, Circular Economy Project Manager at Rwanda Red Cross Society, Nyamasheke District authorities, Gihundwe Hospital, schools, business representatives, waste collectors, environmental non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other key stakeholders involved in environmental management and community development.
The workshop brought together a broad range of stakeholders to validate preliminary findings from the Waste Analysis and Characterization Study currently being undertaken in Rusizi and Nyamasheke Districts. The study aims to generate reliable evidence on waste generation, composition, current management practices, and opportunities for circular economy interventions that can contribute to sustainable waste management and green economic development in the Lake Kivu Basin.
During the workshop, researchers presented the preliminary study findings and facilitated discussions to validate the data, identify existing challenges, and gather recommendations from stakeholders. The interactive discussions highlighted the importance of strengthening waste segregation at source, improving collection and recycling systems, promoting public awareness, and creating opportunities for waste valorization through circular economy approaches.
The validation workshop represents an important milestone in ensuring that the study findings accurately reflect local realities and stakeholder experiences. The validated results will inform evidence-based policies, planning, and investments aimed at improving waste management systems, protecting the environment, and creating green livelihoods in the Lake Kivu Basin.
The Waste Analysis and Characterization Study demonstrates the commitment of the University of Kigali to supporting research-driven solutions that advance environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and inclusive socio-economic development in Rwanda.
