The University of Kigali (UoK) is placing transformational education, academic excellence, discipline and practical skills at the heart of its mission to prepare graduates who can compete and succeed in Rwanda and the global labour market.
The message was emphasized by Prof. Nshuti Manasseh, Chairman of the Board of Promoters and Mr. Philibert Afrika, Chairman Governing Body and a member of promoters during an interactive session with students at the Remera Campus.
The session brought together students from various schools and senior members of University management to discuss academic excellence, personal development, career preparation, discipline and opportunities beyond university.
Addressing students, Prof. Nshuti emphasized that university education should go beyond attending classes, passing examinations and obtaining degrees. He challenged students to view their university experience as an opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills, character and confidence required to succeed in a competitive world.
“Education is not about sitting in classes and obtaining degrees only. It should be transformational. We are producing students who can compete effectively in the labour market, both locally and internationally,” he said. This highlights the ongoing relevance of “Transformational Education” at the Heart of our Vision, UoK Promoters for both staff and students.

Prof. Nshuti highlighted the University’s investment in experienced academic staff, including professors and PhD holders, as part of its commitment to quality education. He encouraged students to take advantage of the expertise available at UoK through active engagement with lecturers, research, mentorship and academic discussions.
Mr. Philibert Afrika, Chairman of the Governing Body and a Member of the Board of Promoters, emphasized the importance of self-discipline, personal responsibility and respect for lecturers as essential values for students seeking to succeed both academically and in life.
“If we do not emphasize discipline, we will not be fair to your parents or to yourselves. We have an integrity to protect, and true success comes through discipline, hard work and perseverance, not through an easy life.”

He encouraged students to understand that discipline is not only about following rules, but also about developing the right attitude, making responsible choices, managing their time well and remaining committed to their goals even when faced with challenges.
He also reminded students that success does not happen overnight, stressing the importance of patience, consistency, hard work and perseverance throughout their academic journey. He encouraged them to build good habits, maintain high standards of conduct and remain focused on becoming responsible professionals and productive members of society. Clearly, “Transformational Education” at the Heart of our Vision, UoK Promoters is more than a slogan – it is an ongoing practice at the university.
The discussion was also attended by Vice Chancellor Prof. George Kimathi, senior members of University management and students from various schools.
