Advancing Collaboration & Academic Exchange: The University of Kigali was delighted to host visiting staff from Wyzsza Szkola Gospodarki (WSG), Poland, and Ostrava University, Czech Republic, as part of a four-day mobility program focused on deepening academic partnerships, collaborative research, and staff-student exchange. The visit underscored UoK’s commitment to building impactful international relationships and fostering a global academic community.   A Week of Strategic Collaboration and Innovation Day 1 – Strategic Introductions & Foundation Building (March 24th) The WSG delegation was welcomed at the University by the Director of International Partnerships and met with the Vice Chancellor and UoK’s leadership team. The Day featured: Institutional presentations and overviews. Discussions on research commercialization and inclusive education. Presentations on entrepreneurship support and funding opportunities. Roundtable discussions set the tone for future collaboration. Day 2 – Triangular Engagement: UoK–WSG–Ostrava (March 25th) The second day of the mobility program saw an exciting expansion of dialogue as Ostrava University joined the exchange. Together with WSG and UoK, the visiting teams participated in a dynamic day of collaboration. Key highlights included: A meeting between the WSG team and the Chairman of UoK’s Governing Body focused on joint research, blended learning, and student/staff mobility. Interactive guest lectures and knowledge-sharing sessions with SCIT students, led by Dr. Pavel and Dr. Vladimir from Ostrava University, promote vibrant academic exchange. In-depth discussions around curriculum development, particularly in Artificial Intelligence and other emerging academic trends. Dialogue on enhancing inclusive education, language development, and resource mobilization. Please insert the two lecturers from Ostarva. The tri-university partnership envisions continued collaboration in international academic events, notably WSG’s International Week in May 2025 and Ostrava University’s professional training Week, which will provide further cross-cultural and professional exchange platforms. Day 3 – Academic Engagement & Student Innovation (March 26th) The third day featured a forum on AI, innovation, and emerging academic trends. UoK students showcased their innovation projects in an engaging session that stimulated dialogue around funding and mentorship in academic entrepreneurship. Day 4 – Collaborative Outlook & Future Opportunities (March 27th) The final day opened with open discussions on: Challenges faced by international students. Upcoming mobility and exchange programs. Participation in global academic events. UoK Hosts Ostrava Dinner

UoK Hosts Ostrava Dinner. As part of the enriching staff mobility exchange between the University of Kigali and the University of Ostrava, the final evening was marked with a warm and elegant dinner reception held at Khana Khazana Restaurant in Kigali. This special gathering was an opportunity to celebrate the strong academic and cultural bonds that had been forged during the week.   UoK was honored to host our guests from the University of Ostrava alongside senior management members. The evening began with introductions from all guests, followed by a speech by Prof. George Kimathi, the Vice Chancellor, who welcomed everyone as UoK Hosted Ostrava Dinner. The highlight of the evening was a powerful and inspiring address by Prof. Manasseh Nshuti, Chairman of the Board of Promoters, who reflected on his academic journey in the United Kingdom and the values that continue to shape his commitment to higher education. He passionately emphasized the importance of: Nurturing young minds for leadership in an ever-changing world Promoting a culture of academic excellence and professional development Championing youth entrepreneurship as a pathway to economic transformation Empowering students to not only excel in their careers but also build their own enterprises His message resonated deeply with both the UoK and Ostrava teams, reinforcing the shared values of academic collaboration and societal impact. As the evening drew to a close, Prof. Nshuti and Prof. Kimathi led a special gift handover ceremony, presenting tokens of appreciation to the University of Ostrava delegation. This symbolic gesture sealed the spirit of partnership, mutual respect, and the anticipation of continued academic cooperation. The dinner was a celebration of shared vision, cultural unity, and the exciting prospects of global collaboration!

UoK’s Centre for Applied Logistics and Supply Chain Management Empowers Staff at CILT Africa Forum

University of Kigali Centre for Applied Logistics and Supply Chain Management Empowers Staff at CILT Africa Forum. The Centre for Applied Logistics and Supply Chain Management (CALSCM), in collaboration with Learn Logistics by Kühne Foundation Germany, proudly sponsored 10 staff members to attend the 18th Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Africa Forum, held in Kigali.   This strategic sponsorship forms part of the active Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the University of Kigali and the Kühne Foundation, aimed at strengthening professional capacity, advancing logistics education, and promoting research in supply chain management across Africa.   The CILT Africa Forum 2025, hosted in Kigali for the first time, brought together over 500 logistics and transport professionals, academics, policymakers, and students from across the continent. The University of Kigali’s delegation made a strong showing at the event, with two staff members officially awarded the prestigious status of CILT Fellows, in recognition of their leadership and contributions to the logistics and transport sector. In addition, one staff member presented a peer-reviewed paper, contributing valuable insights on innovations in supply chain resilience and sustainability in Africa.     Speaking about the milestone, Dr Ronald Kwena, Associate Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Enterprise at the University of Kigali and Director of the Centre, remarked: “This opportunity has elevated the academic and professional profiles of our staff. The Kühne Foundation’s continued support through our MoU is vital in positioning the University of Kigali as a regional hub for logistics and supply chain capacity development.”   Mr. Teferi Gedif FentaView, Country Director for Ethiopia and Regional Lead for Learn Logistics by Kühne Foundation, also attended and held strategic discussions with the University’s leadership to operationalize the MoU further. The engagement focused on future joint activities, including faculty exchange, curriculum co-development, and applied research projects. The University of Kigali remains committed to building strong partnerships that align education with the evolving demands of industry and national development. The presence and recognition of its staff at this high-level continental forum exemplify the University’s growing influence in shaping the future of logistics and supply chain management in Africa.

Empowering the Future of Logistics and Supply Chain Management

As Kigali became the epicenter of digital innovation during the Global AI Summit, the University of Kigali’s Centre for Applied Logistics and Supply Chain Management (LSCM) simultaneously held a dynamic two-day workshop on Emerging Technologies in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, from April 3–4, 2025, at The Manor Hotel, Kigali.  The workshop was hosted by the Centre for Applied Logistics and Supply Chain Management as part of the Memorandum of Understanding between University of Kigali and Learn Logistics by Kuhne Foundation   While global thought leaders gathered to discuss the transformative potential of artificial intelligence across sectors, this workshop provided a focused platform for logistics and supply chain professionals to explore how emerging technologies are revolutionizing procurement, warehousing, transportation, and data analytics in supply chain operations across Africa.   Day 1 Highlights: Digital Shifts and Smart Logistics The workshop was officially opened by Dr. Kwena Ronald, Associate Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation & Enterprise, who emphasized the University’s commitment to equipping professionals with future-ready skills aligned with Rwanda’s digital transformation agenda. Charles Harerimana of World Vision kicked off technical discussions with a session on Automation in Procurement and Warehousing, presenting impactful case studies of digitized humanitarian logistics operations. Dr. Wilson Musoni, University of Kigali, took center stage with his session on AI Applications in Logistics and Transportation, linking local innovations to global trends being discussed at the AI Summit across town. His presentation underscored the growing synergy between AI and logistics optimization in developing countries. Post-lunch, Pascal Kagarama of Gorilla Logistics delivered an engaging double session on Transport Management and Port Operations Software, showcasing cutting-edge tools reshaping cargo flow and port efficiency in East Africa. Day 2 Highlights: Analytics and Intelligent Decision-Making Dr Songa Jean Bosco of Songa Logistics took the stage with a deep dive into Warehouse and Customs Management Software. His practical insights were well received, especially as he shared live system demonstrations reflecting real-world challenges and solutions.   Dr. Martin Gachukia, University of Kigali, then led an insightful session on Procurement Analytics, connecting the dots between big data, procurement efficiency, and performance metrics that supply chain leaders can no longer afford to ignore. The afternoon featured Dr. Akumuntu Joseph, also from the University of Kigali, presenting on Data-Driven Decision-Making in Logistics. His session linked decision science with digital dashboards, AI-driven forecasting, and logistics KPIs, echoing key themes from the broader discussions at the AI Summit. In an interactive wrap-up session, Umar Luzinda and Olivier Akili facilitated a participatory dialogue where attendees reflected on the sessions, shared innovations, and forged future collaborations. The workshop concluded with a vibrant networking session that emphasized cross-sectoral and pan-African cooperation.

To equip our students with the skills, confidence, and opportunities needed to thrive, we conducted two impactful initiatives: an Employability Programme and a Recruitment Drive, in partnership with Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator. Held as part of our ongoing efforts to enhance professional development, the Employability Programme provided Year 3 undergraduate students (Class of 2024) with essential tools to navigate the job market and by empowering future professionals. The sessions covered: Employability Skills Development – Enhancing workplace readiness; Job Application Preparation – Crafting standout resumes and cover letters Job Interview Techniques – Mastering interview etiquette and strategies Personal Branding – Building a compelling professional identity Insights into Job Market Trends – Understanding evolving industry demands Language Proficiency Tests – Assessing communication skills for competitive career paths Through this initiative, students gained real-world insights and practical skills that will help them confidently step into the workforce, whether pursuing employment or launching their own ventures. Strategic Recruitment Drive in Partnership with Harambee Further reinforcing our commitment to student employability, we partnered with Harambee-Youth Employment Accelerator for a recruitment drive that provided our students with direct access to employment opportunities. Candidates underwent rigorous English and French language proficiency assessments, ensuring they met the linguistic requirements for roles at our partner’s client, CCI. Those who successfully passed the tests were invited for final-stage interviews at Harambee’s premises. The event provided students with first-hand exposure to hiring processes, real-world job requirements, and direct employment opportunities, reinforcing our commitment to producing work-ready graduates. At UoK, we remain dedicated to promoting a learning environment that extends beyond the classroom. Through strategic partnerships, hands-on training, and career-focused initiatives, we continue to empower our students to excel in their careers, whether in employment or entrepreneurship.

The International Conference on Green and Sustainable Development 2025, held at Kigali Serena Hotel, hosted an insightful side session on Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SCM) on March 11, 2025. This session examined the crucial role of sustainable supply chain management (SCM) in achieving environmental, social, and economic sustainability objectives. It also marked the official launch of the Centre for Applied Logistics and Supply Chain Management at the University of Kigali, sponsored by Learn Logistics by Kühne Foundation, Germany. The discussion covered strategies for minimizing environmental impact, overcoming implementation challenges, and leveraging technology to enhance efficiency and resilience. The panel addressed crucial aspects of sustainable supply chain management through a set of thought-provoking questions: How does sustainable supply chain management contribute to broader environmental and economic sustainability goals? What are the most promising innovations in sustainable supply chain management today? What are the most significant barriers preventing companies from fully adopting sustainable supply chain practices? What policies and regulations should governments and International bodies implement to encourage sustainable supply chain practices? How can universities and research institutions contribute to advancing sustainable supply chain management? What trends are shaping the future of sustainable supply chain management in Africa and globally? The panelists shared insights into how sustainable SCM practices can reduce carbon footprints, enhance circular economy models, and promote ethical sourcing and labor practices. Discussions also highlighted real-world case studies and policy recommendations that could drive sustainable transformation in the logistics and supply chain sector. Prof. Alfonso Duran highlighted the essence of “Overcoming Supply Chain Vulnerabilities” to “Supply Chain Challenges and Capacity Building.” The presentation focused on the role of online and hybrid education in lowering access barriers to higher education, which resonated with the Kühne Foundation’s Learn Logistics aims.
