University of Kigali Researchers Embark on Applied Research in Logistics and Supply Chain management.

Researchers from the University of Kigali have secured funding to advance research in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, marking a significant step toward evidence-based solutions for economic development in Africa. The funding, awarded under LEARN Logistics by Kühne Foundation, Germany Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) advances Logistics and Supply Chain Management capacity. This funding highlights the growing research capacity of the University of Kigali and its commitment to addressing critical development challenges through applied, policy-relevant Research. Leading the Research are Dr Ronald Kwena and Dr Joseph Akumuntu, who will undertake a project titled Design and Evaluation of an Integrated Urban Waste Logistics Model. Their research focuses on optimizing waste collection, transportation, and disposal systems within rapidly urbanizing environments. By integrating data-driven route optimization, stakeholder coordination, and sustainable waste management practices, the project aims to improve operational efficiency while reducing environmental impact. The findings are expected to inform municipal waste management strategies and contribute to cleaner, more resilient urban systems. Complementing this work, Dr Martin Gachukia will lead a study on Assessing the Effects of Non-Tariff Barriers on Cross-Border Supply Chain Efficiency under the AfCFTA Framework. This research examines how regulatory, administrative, and procedural barriers affect the movement of goods across African borders, particularly in the context of the African Continental Free Trade Area. By identifying bottlenecks and quantifying their impact on trade efficiency, the study aims to provide actionable insights for policymakers, regional bodies, and private sector stakeholders seeking to enhance intra-African trade and economic integration The LEARN Logistics programme offers not only financial support but also access to international expertise, collaborative networks, and capacity-building opportunities. University of Kigali joins KA171 Erasmus+ Mobility Project 2026

Four students from the University of Kigali have embarked on an exciting international academic journey through the KA171 Erasmus+ Mobility Project 2026, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s expanding global Research agenda. The initiative, led by Dr Ronald Kwena, the Associate Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Enterprise as Principal Investigator, is being implemented in collaboration with Hochschule Kempten University of Applied Sciences, Germany. This partnership reflects a growing commitment to strengthening international research collaboration, student mobility, and innovation-driven learning. The programme brings together a diverse cohort of students from Germany, partner universities in the Western Balkans, and selected institutions across Rwanda; The students will be joining their counterparts from University of Rwanda (UR) and University of Lay Adventists of Kigali (UNILAK). Participants will engage in interdisciplinary teamwork, working virtually throughout the semester to co-develop innovative solutions to real-world challenges. The Erasmus+ KA171 funding framework supports this collaboration by covering travel and accommodation costs, ensuring equitable participation and fostering inclusive academic exchange. Throughout the semester, students will collaborate in multicultural teams, gaining exposure to different academic perspectives, digital collaboration tools, and problem-solving approaches. The programme emphasizes experiential learning, cross-cultural communication, and innovation, aligning closely with the University of Kigali’s strategic focus on research excellence and global competitiveness. The involvement of the Associate Deputy Vice Chancellor underscores the institution’s commitment to embedding internationalization within its research and enterprise agenda. The programme will culminate in a high-profile final event scheduled for 25 June 2026 at Hochschule Kempten in Germany. During this event, participating teams will present and pitch their project outcomes alongside activities linked to the renowned “5 Euro Business” course. Selected students, including representatives from the University of Kigali, will travel to Germany during calendar week 26 (22–26 June 2026) to participate in the final presentations, networking sessions, and collaborative engagements.This initiative not only enhances the academic and professional development of participating students but also strengthens institutional partnerships and reinforces the University of Kigali’s position within the global higher education landscape. UNIVERSITY OF KIGALI/ MUSANZE CAMPUS INDUCTION WEEK FOR NEW STUDENTS

The Induction Week at the University of Kigali /Musanze Campus was successfully conducted on 25/03/2026, marking a significant milestone in welcoming newly admitted students into the academic community. The event brought together key university officials, including the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academics (DVC-A), the Dean of Students, the Campus Administrator, the Quality Assurance Officer, the Head of the Department’s office, the Finance office, the Registrar’s office, and representatives from the Guild Council. The program was designed to formally introduce students to university life, academic expectations, and institutional values. Throughout the induction sessions, speakers emphasized the importance of discipline, integrity, and commitment to academic excellence as fundamental pillars for success. Students were encouraged to cultivate good character, actively engage in their studies, and take full responsibility for their personal and academic development. In addition to academic guidance, the induction provided an opportunity for students to familiarize themselves with university structures, support services, and governance systems. The presence of the Guild Council further highlighted the importance of student leadership and participation in campus activities. Taken together, the Induction Week was a success, effectively orienting new students to the university environment and equipping them with the knowledge and motivation needed to begin their academic journey with confidence and purpose. WUST AI Expert Prof. Khondaker Abdullah Al Mamun Visits UoK

Yesterday, the University of Kigali (UoK) had the honor of hosting Prof. Khondaker Abdullah Al Mamun, an esteemed AI Professor from the Washington University of Science and Technology (WUST). The Origin of the Partnership The collaboration began at the Global AI Summit on Africa 2025, held at the Kigali Convention Centre. It was there that Prof. Mamun first met Prof. Prince Wasajja, Director of the UoK Language Centre, during a session on “AI in Language.” Prof. Mamun committed to supporting the Centre in launching innovative ventures that integrate AI Language Models into its service offerings. Key Strategic Discussions During his campus visit, Prof. Mamun engaged in high-level discussions focused on institutional growth and community impact: a) Innovation & Enterprise: He met with Dr. Kwena (AVDC, Research and Innovation) to outline frameworks for effective innovation, ensuring university research translates into tangible benefits for the community. b) ICT Digital Hub: He further consulted with Dr. Musoni (Dean, SCIT) on the practical implementation of AI initiatives within the newly established UoK ICT Digital Hub. The University of Kigali (UoK) officially welcomed its new cohort of students through a series of inspiring orientation sessions held across the Day, Evening, and Weekend programmes. The sessions were designed to go beyond a traditional introduction, focusing on mindset transformation, discipline, integrity, and personal responsibility as the foundation of academic and professional success. The Chairman of the Board of Promoters, Prof. Manasseh Nshuti, reminded students that university marks a defining turning point in their lives: “University is the beginning of your transformation.” He encouraged students to cultivate discipline, punctuality, and adaptability, emphasizing that while we may not choose where we are born, we have the power to determine who we become and where we are going. The Chairman of the Governing Body, Mr. Philibert Afrika, urged students to take full ownership of their learning journey while reaffirming the university’s commitment to delivering quality education through highly qualified faculty, including professors and PhD holders. “We are here to make sure that what we promised you is what you get.” He emphasized that education is not merely about earning a certificate, but about acquiring knowledge, skills, and competencies that shape lifelong success. UoK Concludes Leadership Masterclass

The University of Kigali successfully concluded a five-week Leadership Masterclass that ran from 16th February to 17th March 2026 at the Main Campus. Indeed, the University of Kigali Concludes Leadership Masterclass was a highlight for the campus this spring. The program attracted 41 undergraduate and postgraduate students from various schools. Throughout the five weeks, participants explored several key topics, including discussions centered on the Leadership Masterclass concluded at University of Kigali. Leading Self Before Others Communication and Influence Leadership in Action Emotional Intelligence and Team Leadership The training was facilitated by a team of highly experienced professionals; they played an integral role in the University of Kigali concluding its Leadership Masterclass. UoK Hosts Delegates from SWPS University, Poland

On October 24, 2025, UoK Director of International Affairs and Partnership had the pleasure of hosting two distinguished delegates from SWPS University, Poland: Alicja Kotłowska (LL.M., MBA, MSc, MA), Vice-Rector’s Representative for International Affairs and Researcher in the Social Sciences Division, and Radosław Stanczewski, Director of the Office for International Cooperation. The meeting provided an excellent platform for both institutions to share insights about their academic programs, research initiatives, and internationalization strategies. During the visit, both parties discussed opportunities for collaboration and agreed to work towards a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which has since been signed, as well as an Inter-Erasmus+ Institutional Agreement, which is in its final stages of formalization. The discussions also included exploring participation in international conferences, with plans to initially join online and attend in person in the future. Delegates expressed their admiration for the University of Kigali, noting its impressive facilities and academic excellence. A visit to SWPS University in Warsaw was scheduled for May, providing another opportunity to deepen ties and explore joint projects.

UoK Showcases Research and Innovation Leadership at ICGSD 2026 through these initiatives, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development. Furthermore, UoK Showcases Research and Innovation Leadership at ICGSD 2026 by continuously supporting innovative projects in the sustainability sector. UoK hosted the Innovation Showcase, chaired by Dr. Ronald Kwena, highlighting innovative research and solutions addressing global sustainability challenges. The University also convened the Sustainable Supply Chain Session in collaboration with LEARN Logistics by Kühne Foundation. The session was moderated by Luzinda Umar and featured an esteemed panel comprising Dr. Simon Peter Nadeem (LEARN Logistics by Kühne Foundation, Germany), Prof. Alfonso Heras Duras (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Spain), and Dr. Martin Gachukia (University of Kigali, Rwanda), who shared expert insights on advancing sustainable supply chain systems. In addition, several UoK scholars including Virginie Mukasonga, Annet Muberarugo, James Hakizimana, Peace Kajura, and Stratton Ndyamuba presented their research papers during the PhD Colloquium as part of their ongoing doctoral programmes.
