University of Kigali Advances Teaching Excellence Through Ivey Business School Workshop on Case-Based Pedagogy

The University of Kigali recently hosted a high-impact Faculty Development Workshop on Case-Based Pedagogy, facilitated by Professor Iris Berdrow of Ivey Business School, Western University, Canada, under the 39 Country Initiative. This event demonstrates how the University of Kigali Advances Teaching Excellence Through Ivey Business School Workshop on Case-Based Pedagogy.

The workshop, part of the Rwanda Workshop Series organised by Ivey Business School, brought together academic staff to strengthen teaching excellence through the effective use of the case method. Practical, Hands-On Approach to Case Teaching

Professor Berdrow delivered a highly interactive session focused on the practical application of case-based pedagogy. The workshop moved beyond theory, engaging participants in real-time discussions and simulations that demonstrated how the case method transforms the classroom into a dynamic learning environment and fully supported the goal that University of Kigali Advances Teaching Excellence Through Ivey Business School Workshop on Case-Based Pedagogy.

Faculty members were guided through:

  • What constitutes an effective business case
  • Different types of cases and how to select them for specific teaching objectives
  • The Case Teaching Method, with emphasis on facilitation rather than traditional lecturing
  • Techniques for managing classroom discussions and encouraging broad participation

Speaking on the significance of the workshop, Professor Ogechi Adeola, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic at the University of Kigali, noted:

The workshop was delivered under the 39 Country Initiative, a flagship programme of Ivey Business School that expands access to high-quality case teaching resources in developing countries. Through this initiative, faculty at the University of Kigali benefit from free access to a wide range of teaching cases and instructional materials, supporting the adoption of innovative and globally relevant teaching approaches.

Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with faculty highlighting the practical relevance, interactive delivery, and immediate applicability of the case method to their teaching.

Dr Samuel Wabala of the Graduate School described the workshop as “highly impactful and well aligned with contemporary teaching practices, offering new insights and valuable concepts.”

Similarly, James Hakizimana of the School of Computing and Information Technology (SCIT) noted that “the interactive and practical approach made the session highly engaging and effective. The guidance brought the case method to life, deepening my understanding and providing valuable, ready-to-use tools to enhance classroom engagement and student learning outcomes.”
