Yesterday, the University of Kigali (UoK) had the honor of hosting Prof. Khondaker Abdullah Al Mamun, an esteemed AI Professor from the Washington University of Science and Technology (WUST).
The Origin of the Partnership
The collaboration began at the Global AI Summit on Africa 2025, held at the Kigali Convention Centre. It was there that Prof. Mamun first met Prof. Prince Wasajja, Director of the UoK Language Centre, during a session on “AI in Language.” Prof. Mamun committed to supporting the Centre in launching innovative ventures that integrate AI Language Models into its service offerings.
Key Strategic Discussions
During his campus visit, Prof. Mamun engaged in high-level discussions focused on institutional growth and community impact:
a) Innovation & Enterprise: He met with Dr. Kwena (AVDC, Research and Innovation) to outline frameworks for effective innovation, ensuring university research translates into tangible benefits for the community.
b) ICT Digital Hub: He further consulted with Dr. Musoni (Dean, SCIT) on the practical implementation of AI initiatives within the newly established UoK ICT Digital Hub.
Immediate Impact & Future Outlook
Demonstrating his commitment to education, Prof. Mamun has graciously accepted an invitation to deliver a guest lecture to ICT evening students today, prior to his departure tonight.
To formalize this burgeoning partnership, plans for a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the institutions are already underway, signaling a long-term commitment to technological advancement at UoK.
