University of Kigali Senior Management leads the way in Research Colloquium

The University of Kigali senior management provided life-changing and career-changing Post Graduate insights in a research colloquium held on May 6, 2023 at University of Kigali campus. The senior management included the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. David Wangombe and the Deputy Vice Chancellor-Academic, Prof. Felix Maringe. The Workshop participants included graduate students currently undertaking research in the areas of Economics, Finance/Accounting, Information Technology, Project Management, Human Resource Management, Procurement & Supply Chain Management, Education, Public Policy & Management and Executive MBA. The Graduate School faculty were also in attendance. In his opening remarks, The Vice-Chancellor pointed out the need for research in academia and industry, “research should be used to solve problems facing the society” he noted. The Vice-Chancellor provided life-changing post graduate research insights such as guidelines on how research should be conducted, managing research time by ‘making it a habit’, balancing between the different life needs and research.  He implored the masters students to join research clubs or groups that will facilitate sharing of ideas.  “Research clubs will act as support groups that enable students to encourage and lift each other by reading each other’s work,” the Vice Chancellor noted. The Vice-Chancellor added that literature review is one of the critical aspects of research.  He advised students to conduct a review of literature by reading available literature such as articles.  “Starting with the known will help identify existing theories, methods, challenges, findings, conclusions and limitations” he emphasized.  Using a literature review map, he also pointed out that reviewing literature should be conducted with a purpose to avoid plagiarism. On his part, The Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Academic focused on literature review for postgraduate studies.  His presentation responded to the following questions; what is a literature review?  Why is it important as an academic endeavor?  What are the types of literature review?  What characterizes a good literature review?  What are the key elements/processes in conducting a literature review? What are some of the conundrums students face in writing a literature review? The Deputy Vice chancellor-Academic revealed that literature review is important since it helps in clarifying, critiquing, directing and justifying the new research effort and mapping the empirical terrain.  He also expounded the different types of literature review including Narrative reports of literature, Scoping reviews, Systematic reviews, Annotated bibliographies, Meta-analysis reviews and Meta synthesis.  He particularly laid emphasis on the structure of literature review that includes a conceptual review, a theoretical review and an empirical review. The workshop was opened by Dr. Sanja Michael, The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Institutional Development, Research and Innovation.  Dr. Sanja Michael noted that masters students should take advantage of such colloquium to improve their research skills.  In his closing remarks, Dr. Kwena Ronald, Dean of the Graduate School and organizer of the colloquium highlighted the fact that the Graduate School is shifting focus to research. “We want to give more time to research activities.”

University of Kigali School of Law places 2nd in the 2023 Inter-University Moot Court Competition

On Thursday, 29th June 2023, students from the University of Kigali (UoK) School of Law placed 2nd in the Inter-University Moot Court on “Climate Change Refugees – Enhancing Government’s Transparency and Accountability in Promotion of Human Rights”. The competition was organized by the Schools of Law in Rwanda and Mount Kenya University Parklands Law Campus. The competition took place on 29th June 2022 at Mount Kigali University, Rwanda. It brought together three Law Schools in four (4) private universities, one (1) public university in Rwanda, and Mount Kenya University Parklands Law Campus. The UoK students successfully progressed through the Preliminary Hearing stage to reach the Finals. Subsequently, they became the second-best and received the 1st  Runner-up Team Trophy. The UoK team further received a trophy for Overall Best Female Speaker.  The UoK Law students were the 2ndamong all Schools of Law in public and private universities in Rwanda and Mount Kenya University Parklands Law Campus; and the 1st among the  Rwandan Law Schools. University of Kigali renews its Partnership with the Imbuto Foundation

The University of Kigali (UoK) has renewed its partnership with the Imbuto Foundation, a Rwanda-based Non-governmental Organization with a focus on intervention programmes in Education, Youth Empowerment and Health. At a meeting held at UoK on 20th October 2023 to sign an MoU between both institutions, the Chairman of UoK’s Governing Body, Mr. Philibert Afrika announced the university’s decision to increase the number of scholarships awarded to high school graduates from the Foundation from 10 to 15, adding that the decision is in alignment with UoK’s commitment to promoting quality higher education for all, especially girls. Thus, going forward, 15 qualified high school graduates from the Imbuto Foundation will be awarded full scholarships to pursue academic programmes at University of Kigali. Mr. Afrika emphasized the need for both parties to ensure an accurate monitoring and assessment of the MoU implementation process, performance of the scholarship beneficiaries as well as the statistics of the number of beneficiaries to ensure the attainment of measurable mutual benefits for the parties involved. He assured the Imbuto team of commitment and continuous support from the university’s Board of Promoters. Speaking about some achievements of the Foundation in terms of education, Mr. Jackson Vugayabugabo, the Ag. Director General of Imbuto Foundation mentioned that the initial programme of the Foundation prioritized the support of rape victims during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and the provision of medical assistance both for them and their children. The second programme is the Girls in Education Programme which focuses on funding higher education for girls, while other programmes focused on Health and Youth Empowerment. He added that the Foundation is introducing new programmes to facilitate comprehensive growth for beneficiaries. According to Mr. Vugayabugabo, the Imbuto Foundation has sponsored 25 students at the high school level and 30 students at the university level since its inception in 2001. He acknowledged UoK’s valuable support to the Foundation over the years and pledged his commitment to ensuring the MoU’s successful implementation and long-term sustainability for the partnership.

University of Kigali Masters Graduate wins the Inaugural National Bank of Rwanda 2022 Postgraduate Research Competition

Manayubahwe Kazana Leonidas, a University of Kigali graduate was crowned the winner of the inaugural 2022 National Bank of Rwanda (BNR) Postgraduate Research Competition. The March 2023 Master of Science in Economics graduate, whose research was titled, “Drivers of inflation during the pandemic: evidence from disaggregated consumption,” beat competitors from the University of Rwanda and Kigali Independent University (ULK). The winner and runner-up were awarded laptops and government bonds by the National Bank of Rwanda (BNR). Manayubahwe Kazana Leonidas receiving his award from The Governor National Bank of Rwanda (BNR).    Another University of Kigali Master of Science in Economics graduate of March 2023, Moses Mudaheranwa emerged among the 6 finalists and was awarded a certificate. The competition had 26 participants enrolled from the three participating Universities; University of Kigali, University of Rwanda and Kigali independent University. The award ceremony took place during the National Bank of Rwanda 2023 Research conference held at the Kigali Convention Centre.  Speaking during the conference, the National Bank of Rwanda Governor revealed that the inaugural research competition targeted a cohort of postgraduate students enrolled in accredited postgraduate programs in economics in Rwanda. The Dean Graduate School, Dr. Kwena Ronald who was also present during the conference and award ceremony, appreciated the Faculty for mentorship of the students.  He noted that the School is privileged to have such highly qualified academic staff.  Speaking on the sidelines of the conference, Dr. KWENA Ronald, the Dean Graduate School revealed that the University of Kigali Graduate School has shifted its focus to producing quality research.  “This achievement shows the results of the quality of research we are targeting to produce.”  He emphasized. University of Kigali Law Students Visit the Rwanda Forensic Institute

Second-year students from the University of Kigali (UoK) School of Law paid a study visit to the Rwanda Forensic Institute on 12th December 2023. The tour was organized by Mr. BANGAYANDUSHA Viateur, lecturer of the Criminology and Criminalistics module at the UoK School of Law, and undertaken to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge acquired from the modules and the practical application of forensic techniques in a real-world setting. The visit aimed at offering a unique and enriching experience, thereby contributing to the holistic development of the law students. The visit provided students with an opportunity to witness the practical application of forensic techniques, reinforcing classroom learning and enhancing comprehension. It also facilitated networking and professional development, as interactions with forensic experts and legal professionals during the visit created networking opportunities essential for future career development in the field of criminology and criminalistics.   The visit further provided a real-world understanding of forensic practices, fostering practical skills and knowledge crucial for future legal professionals. Key Learnings from the Visit Forensic techniques and technology:The students gained insights into various forensic techniques including DNA analysis, fingerprint identification, crime scene reconstruction, and digital forensics, providing a comprehensive understanding of forensic procedures. Interdisciplinary collaboration:The visit also emphasized the collaborative nature of forensic investigations, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation between forensic scientists, law enforcement, and legal professionals. Future Impact of the Visit on the students as Future Lawyers Enhanced practical skills:The practical skills acquired during the visit complemented theoretical knowledge, enhancing the overall competency of University of Kigali law students as competent future legal professionals. Informed legal advocacy:A deeper understanding of forensic procedures equips students to be more effective advocates, enabling them to navigate the legal system with a comprehensive understanding of the role of forensic evidence. Career opportunity:The networking opportunities and exposure to real-world forensic applications expanded the career possibilities for law students, providing avenues for future roles in criminal law, litigation, and forensic consultation. The study visits to the Rwanda Forensic Institute was a transformative experience for the Law students, offering invaluable insights into the practical aspects of criminology and criminalistics. The knowledge gained during the visit is expected to significantly impact the students’ academic journey and contribute to their success as future legal professionals in the dynamic realm of criminal justice.

University of Kigali hosts International Conference in partnership with Nottingham University and Africa Research Group

The 7th Africa Research Group (ARG) International Conference hosted by University of Kigali in partnership with the Africa Research Group and University of Nottingham is underway from August 27th to 29th at Lemigo Hotel in Kigali. Under the theme “Contemporary Developments in the Management of Organizations in Africa: Tapping into Indigenous Knowledge and Developing Viable Partnerships,” the conference aims at delving into pertinent issues surrounding organizational management within the African context. The conference has both local and international researchers who have come together to share research findings centered around the theme. These researchers are dedicated to advancing their understanding of organizational management in Africa, prompting discussions and fostering collaborations to enhance their research endeavors. In an interview with the media, representatives from the University of Kigali expressed their aspiration to become a knowledge-intensive institution with a strong focus on producing valuable knowledge about Africa. Professor Felix Maringe, UoK’s Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic, highlighted, “Our aim is to enhance knowledge productivity, with a focus on African insights. Collaborating with entities like the ARG aligns seamlessly with our goals, adding significant value. This partnership resonates particularly well due to our role as knowledge custodians within Rwanda’s context. “The university’s various research domains, spanning business management, IT, and postgraduate portfolios, strongly contribute to the ideals of the ARG. We anticipate gaining fresh perspectives from global experts, providing a platform for the latest research developments. This interaction goes beyond reading papers; it engages researchers in a richer discourse that enriches our academic pursuits,” Prof. Maringe added. Professor Nnamdi Madichie, UoK’s Professor of Marketing and Entrepreneurship, expressed, “It brings us immense joy to collaborate with Nottingham University in hosting this event. Our aim is to cultivate a comprehensive understanding of diverse perspectives on various issues. Attendees from South Africa, Portugal, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, the United Kingdom, and even Texas have traveled far and wide for this international conference with an African essence.” “After the conference, we aim to reflect and distill key takeaways from the discussions. Following this event, Northwest University has been invited to the University of Kigali to explore potential areas of collaboration. This embodies our focus on capacity building, fostering the ability of individuals to pursue doctorate programs. We anticipate fruitful partnerships with the University of Kigali in the near future, as we work toward establishing our own doctoral program. Portugal is set to host the event next year or in the following two years, hopefully offering our doctoral students an exciting opportunity for international exposure”. Regarding the challenges and opportunities in African organizational management research, keynote speakers shed light on the fascinating opportunities researchers find in Africa in comparison with the challenges they face. Professor Ken Kamoche, Professor at Nottingham University Business School and Director of the Africa Research Group noted that “Africa presents captivating research opportunities, both locally and globally. Organizations grapple with challenges like talent retention and performance management. While these challenges offer opportunities, resource constraints hinder research efforts. For us, collaborating with scholars from both the African continent and overseas is crucial.” He added that “this partnership is valuable because it combines local knowledge with the resources and flexibility we often have. Many of us, especially during conferences like this, engage in such collaborative efforts.” The 7th Africa Research Group International Conference represents a unique blend of research, collaboration, and capacity building, serving as a platform for scholars to come together, share insights, and collectively contribute to advancing the understanding of contemporary organizational management in Africa.  

University of Kigali hosts Former Global CEO of Institute of Internal Auditors for a Public Lecture

University of Kigali on Wednesday 19th April, 2023 hosted Richard F. Chambers, the Former Global CEO of Institute of Internal Auditors at UoK Kigali campus for a public lecture to Undergraduate and Professional courses students on Internal Audit. The lecture by Mr. Chambers covered the following aspects of audit: Essence of Internal Audit, Comparison of Internal Audit to External Audit, Attributes of great Internal Audit, Internal Audit Careers and Audit Priorities in 2023. In welcoming the CEO for the lecture, University of Kigali’s Vice – Chancellor, Prof. David Wangombe stated that internal audit is as important in the management of the University as it is in helping other organizations accomplish their objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluating and improving the effectiveness of risk management, control and governance processes. Also in attendance was Mr. Richard K. Rutuku who is the Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Internal Auditors, Rwanda. Also in attendance from University of Kigali were the Director School of Professional and Executive Programs, Charles K. Omanyo and the Head of Department – Accounting and Finance in the School of Business, Management and Economics, Mr. Stephen Kimuya.

University of Kigali Hosts ICPAR and KASNEB Exams

University of Kigali is honored to host the ICPAR (CPA and CAT) and KASNEB (CPA and CIFA) exams for the April, 2023 examination sitting. ICPAR exams will be done at our Musanze Campus from Monday 24th to Friday 28th April, 2023 while KASNEB exams will be done at our UoK Kigali Campus from Monday 24th to Thursday 27th April, 2023. Hosting of these important ICPAR and KASNEB professional exams is a proof of the Contribution that UoK makes in enhancing Accountancy and Finance professional qualifications not only in Rwanda but also to the entire East African Region. We take this opportunity to wish all the students who will be undertaking these exams all the best. Registration for the August 2023 CPAR, CATR and CPAK is in progress and classes will start in May, 2023. Registration for the Undergraduate and Graduate programs for May, 2023 intake is also in progress.

University of Kigali Graduate School holds Research Conceptualization Workshop

The University of Kigali Graduate School held a research workshop on February 3, 2024 at the UoK Kigali campus. The workshop targeted Masters students currently undertaking research and included participants from the MSc. Finance, MSc. Economics, MSc. Information Technology, MSc. Project Management, MSc. Human Resource Management, MSc. Procurement & Supply Chain Management, MBA Finance & Accounting, MBA Project Management, MBA Human Resource Management, Master of Public Policy & Management, Master of Education Management & Administration, and Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) cohorts. Prof. Felix Maringe (DVC-IDRI) speaking at the workshop Speaking at the workshop, the Deputy Vice Chancellor – Institutional Development, Research and Innovation, Prof. Felix Maringe encouraged participants to take advantage of such research activities and sharpen their research skills.  He echoed that the University was angling towards commercializing research outputs, which demanded that the students be at par with the industry needs and problems such as climate change. Prof. Maringe emphazised the need of conceptualization in Research.  He stated that a good research must clearly show the topic, title, variables, objectives and hypotheses. Other facilitators at the workshop included Prof. Abdulrazaq Oniye (Education), Prof. Nnamdi Madichie (Marketing & Entrepreneurship), Dr. Kato Mahazi (Accounting & Finance), Dr. Gachiri Wilson (Economics) and Dr. Odendo Ruth (Human Resource Management).
