University of Kigali Recognized as a Model for Inclusive Education, Urged to Expand Support for Visually Impaired Students

The University of Kigali Center for Equity and Inclusiveness (CEI), in collaboration with the Rwanda National Union of the Blind, successfully hosted a discussion aimed at promoting inclusive education in universities across Rwanda. The primary focus of the discussion was on expanding enrollment opportunities for visually impaired students and ensuring that higher education institutions become more accessible to all learners, regardless of disabilities. During the discussion, the University of Kigali (UoK) was recognized as a leading model for fostering inclusive education. UoK has demonstrated a commitment to inclusivity through its policies and advocacy for equitable access to education. As part of this recognition, stakeholders urged the university to expand its inclusive education programs to accommodate visually impaired students. Mr. Samuel Kabera, the Director of the Center for Equity and Inclusiveness, emphasized the importance of inclusive education in the country. He highlighted how the University of Kigali is deeply committed to and supportive of individuals with special needs, ensuring that they have equal access to quality education and opportunities for academic success. Key points discussed included: The importance of accessibility in academic resources, digital platforms, and physical infrastructure. The need for assistive technologies, such as screen readers, Braille materials, and audio learning tools, to support students who are visually impaired. Training university staff and faculty on inclusive teaching practices. Policy recommendations to ensure the sustainable and institutionalization of inclusive education frameworks. Collaboration between universities and organizations advocating for the rights of persons with disabilities. Mr. Samuel Kabera emphasized that inclusive education is a fundamental right and should be a national priority. As a next step, universities in Rwanda are encouraged to develop actionable strategies to facilitate the enrollment and support of visually impaired students in higher education institutions. Center for Equity and Inclusiveness, in partnership with the Rwanda National Union of the Blind, held a discussion on promoting inclusive university education in Rwanda.The Center for Equity and Inclusiveness remains committed to promoting access to quality education for all students and looks forward to continued collaboration with stakeholders in achieving this goal.

On 13th March 2025, the Center for Equity and Inclusiveness at the University of Kigali, in collaboration with the University of Rwanda’s College of Medicine and Health Sciences, successfully hosted a workshop on INCLUSIVE PEDAGOGY themed “Breaking Barriers in Education: Inclusive, Rehabilitation, and Technology (BERT)” As a leading institution in promoting Inclusive Education within Rwanda’s higher education sector, the University of Kigali facilitated all the discussions during the Workshop. “The workshop on Inclusive Pedagogy, themed ‘Breaking Barriers in Education: Inclusive, Rehabilitation, and Technology (BERT),’ aims to foster a deeper understanding of inclusive teaching practices that cater to diverse learners,” said Mr. Samuel Kabera, Director for the Centre for Equity and Inclusivity at the University of Kigali. He emphasized that the workshop seeks to equip educators with practical strategies to create accessible learning environments accommodating students of all abilities. Bringing together educators, researchers, and policymakers, the event explored innovative approaches to inclusivity, with a special focus on rehabilitation and assistive technology. “By integrating technology and evidence-based practices, we can bridge gaps in education and ensure that no learner is left behind,” Mr. Kabera added. The workshop featured interactive sessions, expert discussions, and demonstrations of cutting-edge tools designed to support students with disabilities. Participants gained valuable insights into breaking educational barriers and fostering equitable learning opportunities.

University of Kigali Celebrates International Day of Persons with Disabilities in Nyaruguru District

On December 3, 2024, the University of Kigali’s Center for Equity and Inclusiveness, in collaboration with the National Council of Persons with Disabilities (NCPD), celebrated  the International Day of Persons with Disabilities event in Nyaruguru District, Kibeho Sector. The event provided a valuable platform to highlight the University’s ongoing commitment to inclusive education and to share its achievements in supporting students with special needs. During the event, community members, government officials, and representatives from both local and international NGOs could engage with the University’s efforts in fostering an inclusive educational environment. The University’s special needs students also actively participated in the celebrations, showcasing their achievements and resilience. The University of Kigali is proud of its achievements in creating an accessible and inclusive learning environment. It ensures that students with disabilities receive the support they need to thrive academically and socially. Through its commitment to inclusivity, the University continues to lead the way in shaping a more equitable and accessible higher education system in Rwanda. This event marked another important milestone in the University’s journey to make education more inclusive, aligning with national and international efforts to promote the rights of persons with disabilities. The University of Kigali is committed to providing high-quality education accessible to all, regardless of background or ability.
