Heroes’ Day, or Umunsi w’Intwari, is a significant national observance in Rwanda, celebrated annually on February 1st. It serves as a day of remembrance and appreciation for individuals who have profoundly contributed to the country, particularly in unity, independence, and the fight against injustice. Speaking at the event, Mr. Paul Ndamage, the head of Community Engagement and Country Liaison, emphasized the importance of observing the Heroes Day celebration and reaffirmed the University of Kigali commitment. “It is a day to honor those who stood up for the Rwandan people, defended their rights, and contributed to the vision of a peaceful and prosperous nation.”
The history of Heroes’ Day traces back to Rwanda’s tumultuous past, including the colonial era and the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. During this period, Rwanda experienced extreme division, violence, and destruction, leaving deep scars in the national consciousness. Rwanda undertook a long and challenging journey toward reconciliation, healing, and nation-building in the aftermath.
Mr. Ndamage told students that Heroes’ Day is a way to remember the brave souls who played vital roles in the country’s history, both before and after the genocide. By recognizing these heroes, Rwanda aims to inspire future generations to commit to peace, unity, and the nation’s development.
The core message of Heroes’ Day ties into Rwanda’s broader vision of unity, resilience, and sustainable development. The country has made significant progress in its recovery, with a growing economy, education advances, and health and infrastructure improvements. However, Rwanda continues to face challenges, particularly regarding social cohesion and inclusivity, making celebrating Heroes’ Day all the more relevant.
“This day reminds everyone that the spirit of heroism is alive in Rwandans. It calls on all citizens to contribute to the continued development and peace of the nation, following the example set by the heroes honored on this special day,” said Dr. Samuel Sindayigaya, the Associate Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academics (ADVCA) at the University of Kigali.
Heroes’ Day in Rwanda is more than just commemorating past achievements. It is a powerful symbol of a nation that has undergone tremendous transformation. Through resilience, unity, and commitment to justice, Rwanda is building a future that honors its history and heroes. As the country continues its journey of recovery and growth, Heroes’ Day serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring every Rwandan to embody the values of bravery, compassion, and national pride.
“As we approach Heroes Day, let us take a moment to reflect on the tremendous sacrifices made by those who have shaped the Rwanda we know today. Heroes Day is not just about honoring the past; it is also a call to action for us to contribute to building a stronger, more vibrant future. As students of the University of Kigali, you have the power to make a difference in your community, country, and the world. Whether through your academic achievements, acts of kindness, or your dedication to solving the challenges we face, you have the potential to be a hero in your own right,” said Mr. Ndamage.
