University of Kigali (UoK), Monday June 5, 2017 signed a partnership with the GREEN Network in an arrangement that will see the University become a research focal point for the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
GREEN Network is an international collection of research centers of excellence, which will act as hubs in extending its vision and mission around the world.
Speaking shortly after the signing ceremony, Mr. Philibert AFRIKA, one of the founders of the University and its Executive Chairman, said that the latest development will ensure a successful implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), through the capacity building of officials from the public and private sectors, the civil society and the community at large.
‘’ Such unique goals were undertaken by the United Nations last year and are applicable to both developed and developing countries. Rwanda being among the countries preferred to host a centre of excellence for the realization of the goals, we have a key task in facilitating and implementing the goals,’’ said Mr. AFRIKA, a senior banker and economic development expert.

He pointed out that, through this memorandum of understanding, the University will work with scholars from the Rome bases International Academy for Social and Economic Development (AISES) to build the capacity of the academic staff and students on advanced research methodologies.
In his short remarks, the Ag Vice Chancellor, Prof. Danson MUSYOKI KIMEU, said that deal was an opportunity for Rwanda to benefit from SDGs as an extra stimulus to the current development of the country and the society at large.
“As an institution of higher Learning, we are going to use the shared expertise in training and educating students, to work upon it in terms of spreading and disseminating the standards and knowledge that are crucial for sustainable development , governance and innovation,’’ said Prof Musyoki.

Prof. Valerio De LUCA, Chairman of the International Academy for Social and Economic Development (AISES) and Director of the GREEN Network, expressed his satisfaction over the current networking between Academic Institutions, saying that it helps building values, Academic excellence, responsibility, accountable leadership and entrepreneurship among the young generation.
Earlier on at Novotel Hotel Umubano, during the opening of the lecture, Prof NSHUTI Manasseh, the University’s Chairman of the Board of Promoters thanked AISES and the GREEN Network for having chosen to partner with University of Kigali to make it the research centre for the SDG’s in Rwanda.

The Lecture was also attended by other university promoters, staff and students who raised various questions and made contributions on sustainable development, good governance and innovations.
UoK becomes the third African University after Strathmore Business School in Nairobi, Kenya and the University of Fort Hare in South Africa to join the GREEN Global Network.
